Message from the President

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I send greetings from the Financial Therapy Association. In case you missed it, we held a wonderful annual conference in Los Cabos del San José, México. I left the conference feeling stimulated with new ideas, knowledge, and skills, and with new friends and colleagues. We owe a huge thank you to Marcee Yager, the chair of this year’s conference, as well as the entire conference committee for outstanding organization and programming.

Following the annual conference this year, the Board of Directors spent a considerable amount of time discussing the future of not only the field of financial therapy, but also the direction of FTA and how FTA will continue to lead. As part of this endeavor, we have initiated a Financial Therapist Task Force that is working on outlining core competencies of a financial therapist in order to answer questions like, “What does a financial therapist do?” and “Who can be a financial therapist?” These have been popular questions asked by consumers and by the media. The strategic planning committee is also working on new vision and mission statements. Our goal is to have (at least) drafts of these by the end of the calendar year.

Additionally, if you have not attended one of our webinars yet, you definitely should! We have had a great response to the first three webinars. Four countries have even been represented in these webinars! I want to give a special thank you to Susan Zimmerman who presented the second webinar in June on the topic of how to effectively utilize soft skills when talking about money. Susan has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area and I am grateful that she was willing to volunteer her time.

Most recently, Rick Kahler and Dave Jetson presented on the topic of “conjoint financial therapy” and discussed the model they use with clients. Thank you to both of them for sharing their experiences of working together as a planner-therapist team (with one being a financial planner and the other being a mental health therapist).

Be sure to check out upcoming events including First Friday webinars and the preconference that Dr. Joe Goetz from UGA and myself will be presenting at the annual Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Association conference. We are excited to partner with AFCPE to hold this all day in-person event. CLICK HERE for more information and to Register.

Have a wonderful Fall!

Sincerely,

Kristy Archuleta, PhD, LMFT
President, Financial Therapy Association
Associate Professor, Kansas State University

The 2015 FTA conference in Los Cabos, Mexico was a retreat style meeting where attendees discussed financial therapy in the context of diversity and cultural competence. Dr. Ted Klontz gave us some great tools to use when working with clients during the preconference. Luis Barajas then gave an igniting keynote address about working with specific populations where he emphasized culturally informed money scripts and gave some pointers on cultural sensitivity. Dr. John Grable discussed the past, present, and future of FTA, and Dr. Jerry Gale finished it off with an amazing keynote address to tie it all together. Latest Research in Financial Therapy

All over the world, scholars and practitioners are reading the research and theoretical contributions to the field of financial therapy in the Journal of Financial Therapy (JFT). JFT is published two times per year and you can access it too by going to: www.jftonline.org. The latest issue (Volume 6, Issue 1) was just published this summer.

This quarter, we highlight an article recently published in the latest issue (Volume 6, Issue 1) by Drs. Sonya Britt and Brad Klontz along with Racquel Tibbets and Linda Leitz from Kansas State University. In their article entitled, “The Financial Health of Mental Health Professionals,”, these scholars developed a new measurement tool, Klontz Financial Health Scale (FHS) and studied how mental health professionals compared to other occupations in terms of financial health.
